Tips on Window Frame Water Damage Repair
Windows and window frames are subject to rain, snow, wind and all other kinds of weather. Water damage can affect the appeal of window frames, as well as the safety and stability of the window. If your window frames are made of wood, as many older frames are, you will most likely have to repair the frame because of water damage at some point.
Things you may need:
- Chisel
- Hammer
- Wood filler
- Sandpaper
- Paint
- Paintbrush
- Wood glue
- Caulk
- Paint the window frame if the damage is minimal. Sand the entire window frame to prepare it for painting. This will help the paint stick. Before painting, caulk around the window frame to better seal it and prevent future water damage. Begin painting the entire window frame, taking care to not get paint on the siding of the house. Use long, even strokes for a smooth and finished look.
- Chisel away any rotten or worn away pieces if the damage is more extensive. Position the chisel in the area to remove, and use the hammer to push it into the wood and break away the piece that is damaged. Take care not to hit areas that are not damaged to avoid having to repair those as well.
- Fill the areas which you chiseled out or are missing with wood filler, which can be purchased at any home improvement store. Follow the directions on the package to specific application instructions. After the wood filler is in place, allow it to dry then sand so that it is level with the rest of the window frame. You can then repaint the window frame.
- Remove pieces that are too far gone for repair using the above methods. Sometimes wood is so water damaged that it has to be replaced. Take the removed pieces to a cabinet maker or a professional carpenter and ask them to cut a new piece of frame. The carpenter will use the old piece to replicate it and make a new one, ensuring that the piece will fit back into the window frame. Apply wood glue to the window frame and attach the new piece.
