What to Know Before You Adopt a Cat

Tips to Adopt a Cat

Cats make perfect pets for people of all ages.  They are intelligent, playful and independent.  If you love cats, adopting one from a shelter can be a great way to save a life and get a new companion for your home.  The cat adoption process can be confusing, and there are several tips you need to know before you go through with it.

  • Find shelters and stores that have cats that are available for adoption.  Pet stores that carry supplies will often have a small section dedicated to abandoned cats that need new homes.  This is especially common with larger pet stores that have special adoption programs in place throughout the year.  Local shelters usually have a larger selection of homeless cats than pet stores, so go to a few shelters in your area.

  • Meet the cats, and play with them.  Shelters will usually allow visitors to play with the cats, so they can find the perfect addition for their unique home.  Cats are very independent and aloof before they get to know people, so keep that in mind during your search.  Don’t expect to bond with a cat immediately.  Developing a relationship with your new pet will take time and effort.

  • Have realistic expectations.  Many people want cats with specific traits, but that’s not always possible.  Cats develop their own personalities and behaviors, so it’s very hard to force them to act a certain way.  Cats that are handled every day might never learn to like human contact.  On the other hand, cats that aren’t used to human contact can grow to love it.

  • There is a big difference between adopting cats and kittens.  Kittens are cute and playful, but they require a lot of time, attention and money.  If you have a busy schedule or young children, kittens may not be the best choice for your lifestyle.  Older cats are much calmer and better around kids, but you might need a lot of time and effort to re-train them properly.
