How to Care for Teacup Kittens

Teacup kittens come in a wide variety of breeds and are the smallest type of kittens in the world.  Their tiny size means that teacup kittens require extra special care and handling.  Keep your teacup kittens happy and healthy by holding them properly, consulting a veterinarian regarding proper care and feeding them a nutritious diet.

  • Handle your teacup kittens very carefully, and don’t let young children play with them.  Their tiny size makes teacup kittens extremely fragile.  Actions that wouldn’t harm normal-sized kittens can kill teacup kittens.  You must be very vigilant and gentle when picking them up.  If you have young children, keep them and your kittens separated.  Explain the proper way to pick up teacup kittens before you let any friends or family members hold them.

  • Take your teacup kittens to the veterinarian to get a medical evaluation and any required vaccines.  In addition to conducting a checkup to make sure you kittens are healthy and won’t spread any diseases to one another, your veterinarian can give you advice about caring for teacup kittens.  It’s also a great opportunity to ask any questions you might have.

  • Feed your teacup kittens nutritious high-quality food.  Look for food that contains a lot of protein and is specifically formulated for kittens.  Don’t buy any products that contain fillers.  Contact your veterinarian for exact feeding instructions.

  • Start litter box training early. Carry your kittens to the litter box after feedings or naps several times a day.  Keep the litter box in a quiet area where they won’t get startled.

  • Keep your kittens warm.  Because teacup kittens are smaller than normal kittens they require extra warmth.  In addition to setting up a comfortable bed, include blankets they can cuddle in to keep warm
