How to Raise Teacup Kittens
Teacup kittens are just that small enough to fit in a teacup. They are the smallest kittens in the world and the most popular are Persian and Himalayan varieties. Because of their small size, they require special care and are quite fragile.
- Take your new teacup kitten to your vet for a full exam and to begin its vaccination regimen if not already begun by the breeder.
- Monitor your kitten regularly to make sure they are adjusting to its new surroundings. Teacup kittens are fragile, and their health can change rapidly, so be aware of any changes in behavior, eating or potty habits.
- Prepare for your new kitten's arrival by purchasing all the necessary supplies. These include a bed, food dish, food, carrier, toys, litter and litter box, collar, name tag and grooming supplies.
- Select food that is rich in protein and minerals for your teacup. Purchase tiny bit sizes if available for ease of eating by your kitten.
- Groom your kitty regularly.
- Begin with a light brushing, rubbing of the feet and ears and build up to a warm bath. These are generally not necessary as most kittens maintain their own fur unless tangles develop.
- Socialize your kitten with other family members and pets as soon as possible. Contact with these family members and pets should be a pleasurable experience for your teacup.
- Teach the kitten to use the litter box and the scratching post. It is important to train them early to avoid the development of bad habits.
- Remove any objects or plants that could be harmful to your newest family member.
- Create a safe environment for your teacup when you aren't at home so it is protected from danger. This can be a pen or a large box with a small litter box.
