Tools for Glass Installation
There are several tools that you will need to use in order to safely and effectively install glass. These include cutting, handling, sealing and mounting tools, as well as safety equipment. Without the right tools the job cannot be done properly.
Cutting Tools
- Gold tip glasscutters are used for scoring the glass so that you will get a clean break that results in a piece of glass that will fit into your pre-measured opening.
- A circle or an oval glasscutter is used to score the glass to the desired shape.
- Sharp, high quality cutting wheels are necessary for a good, effective break.
Handling Tools
- Suction mounts are used to carry the glass panel as it is being installed. They can easily dismount after the installation work is complete.
Sealing and Mounting Tools
- A sealant or gasket is applied whenever a glass panel is either being mounted to protect against the elements or is to be watertight.
- An applicator is used to apply the sealant.
- Sometimes either a rubber molding or a gasket needs to be installed around the edges of the glass. An awl is used to install the rubber into the openings around the glass so as to create a weatherproof seal.
Safety Equipment
- Gloves need to be worn so as to keep the worker’s hands safe while handling glass that may have sharp edges.
- Safety glasses keep glass shards from damaging a person’s eyes.
- A dust mask should be worn whenever a large amount of glass is being cut. This keeps glass dust from entering into your lungs.
