Types of 2x4 Lumber
Although plastic has been improved over the years, many still prefer using lumber to create a building and other projects. Many homes are still being built with many different types of lumber. Some people look at 2x4s and think they are the same but they are different in many ways. The lumber comes from different trees that are grown all over the United States.
Types of 2x4 Lumber
Spruce
Spruce trees are actually evergreen trees that grow all over the United States. The trees can reach heights up to 75 feet. They can also spread out to about 20 feet. These types of trees are commonly used during Christmas time. White spruce is one type of spruce tree. It is used more often because it can hold up in different types of soil and can be cut much easier. When it comes to strength to weight ration, nothing compares to it. It is commonly used to make guitars. They are popular when it comes to 2x4s.
Logdepole Pine
This is another type of evergreen tree. It is mostly used to build houses and other buildings. These types of trees can also be used during Christmas. They can reach heights up to 100 feet. They are commonly found in the Western parts of the United States. Not only are they used to make paper and particleboard but also for 2x4s. It is a popular choice when it comes to firewood. This is soft wood but still strong enough to use for many projects.
Alpine Fir
This tree can grow to reach heights up to 90 feet. This type of tree is also an evergreen, which can be used as a Christmas tree. The wood from this tree is dense but can be used to erect parts of a building. It can be used as 2x4s but not much else because it is very dense unlike other types of lumber.
Southern Pine
This is the strongest of all the different types of 2x4s. It is gold in color and is pressure treated for use outdoors. It helps fasteners and nails hold better when the density of the wood is higher. This type of wood is commonly used to build decks and playgrounds.
Douglas Fir
This wood is known as the standard type of wood for many construction workers. It holds up against force and weather elements better than other types of wood. It is popular for use in areas that have high winds and earthquakes. The wood has a red tint to it. Builders use it because it provides a high amount of strength.
