Types of Aromatherapy
Aromatherapy is a considered alternative medicine and involves the use of aromatic scents to treat client ailments. Aromatherapy may be used in conjunction with massage or inhaled. Aromatherapy oils are plant-based essential oils and are chosen based on the needs of the client. Essential oils have been proven to increase mood, decrease anxiety and promote increased body and mind well-being.
Cosmetic Aromatherapy
Essential oils from plants are used in many everyday cosmetic products. Hair, face, body and bath products use oils to bring out healthy skin and hair. Depending on the essential oil used, the product may cleanse, tone or moisturize skin and/or hair.
Massage Aromatherapy
Massage therapists use essential oils regularly when working with their clients. The oil is rubbed deeply into the client's skin, which helps to relax muscles and relieve tension. The scent(s) may also help to relieve anxiety and tension in the client.
Psychotherapy Aromatherapy
Use of aromatherapy in psychotherapy is directed at changing a specific mood or state of mind. The oils are used throughout the treatment room or may be inhaled directly. The goal of the psychotherapist when using aromatherapy is to reduce tension and stress and increase positive feelings.
Olfactory Aromatherapy
This type of aromatherapy asks clients to directly inhale the scents of the essential oils. This type of treatment helps to relieve stress, encourages mental and physical balance within the mind and body and promotes healing.
Medical Aromatherapy
Medical doctors may prescribe essential oils to their patients. Most often, these oils will be taken internally, rather than topically. The only time essential oils should be ingested is with a prescription from a doctor. It is important to only take the oil as prescribed by the doctor.
