Types of Arthritis Medications

Arthritis is swelling of the joints, which causes pain and stiffness. Arthritis is contained in fingers and wrists, in most cases. Arthritis is most prevalent in females and can be acute or temporary. Most doctors prescribe prescription drugs and over-the-counter medications for Arthritis symptoms. More severe symptoms require the joint damage to be repaired by surgery.

Over-the-Counter Medications

  • Over-the-Counter Medications treat mild to moderate arthritis symptoms. Tylenol is the primary drug to treat mild symptoms of arthritis with pain and swelling. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs can treat inflammation in the joints caused by arthritis. Non-steroidal drugs such as NSAISs will reduce joint pain. Non-steroidal drugs should not be taken for more than seven days in a row, because this will cause internal bleeding and kidney damage.

Prescription Meds

  • Prescription Meds are used to treat Arthritis symptoms. Prescription corticosteroids can be used to treat Arthritis symptoms orally or by injection. Your doctor will know which one is best for your symptoms. Steroids such as Prednisone can also treat the symptoms of Arthritis. Anti-rheumatic prescription drugs DMARDS can slow down the effects of the disease with the ability to assist with the pain and swelling.

Surgical Intervention

  • Arthritis can cause damage to your joints, which will require surgery. One procedure used is arthroplasty surgery, which requires the damaged joint to be replaced with prosthesis. A synovectomy surgery is when the joint lining is removed due to inflamed joints. Synovectomy may also be used to repair tendons that are too loose or too tight which causes by joint damage.
