Types of Dance Shoes

When performing dance there are many different shoes available to choose from. If you are looking for that distinct click sound, tap shoes would be the right choice. If the dance is slow, yet graceful, ballet shoes are going to be needed. It is important to know the different types of dance shoes.

Ballet: These shoes are constructed of very soft leather. They are flexible and will easily mold to the wearer's foot. Ballet shoes are quiet and make no noise on stage. They come in various different colors. Some of the most common are light pink, white and black. Classic ballet shoes are usually a simple design with a strap across the center and a thin bow. Ballet shoes can easily be located. Stores, like Payless, sell ballet shoes for around $20.

Tap: Tap shoes are usually a shiny black color. They are kept well polished with no scuffs or scratches. The insole is usually padded and the bottom soles have hard metal plates attached to the toe and heel. This allows the distinct tap noise to be made. Tap shoes have a strap across the center with a ribbon to tie a bow.

Jazz: Jazz shoes are black with a small heel and feature a rounded toe in front. They range from having elaborate detail on the leather to being plain. Jazz shoes lace up and are usually tied.

Pointe: These shoes are made of a shiny silk like material. Most are pink in color. They have a boxy, square area for the toes and tightly lace around the wearer’s ankles.

Ballroom: Ballroom dance shoes come in many different colors and styles. They have a heel that is about an inch, but may be higher or shorter. Most feature open toes, but some are closed. They vary greatly in price and can be reasonable to very expensive.
