Types of Formal Gowns
Formal wear comes in all different shapes and sizes. Most formal gowns in particular are long and drape to the ground. This is the general idea that most people think of when they hear the word. Not all formal gowns have to look like this; they range from long length to short length.
The A-Line
An a-line fit is like a 1960s sheath dress, where its shape is that of an A. A-line formal gowns can be long, but they never drag to the ground and usually end above the ankle. Some of the best choices are a pure white a-line gown with black pumps and accessories, which gives off the feeling of vintage Paris.
The Decorated Bodice
If you have seen celebrity gowns at the Oscars, you’ll know that many have a tight fitted bodice that is usually encrusted with jewels or made out of lace. These are one of the most elegant choices of formal gowns and should be used for glamorous occasions.
The Halter Neck
Halter formal gowns are usually very stream lined and made out of the finest silks. The best colors are a pure white, creamy beige, deep green, midnight blue, or dark purple. These colors enhance a woman’s look no matter her skin tone or hair color and can be worn with bright and brilliant jewelry of any hue.
The Flounced
Flounced formal gowns are in the styles of a 1950’s day dress. They have a wide bottom and are usually puffy, decorated with lace and chiffon. These look wonderful with a low kitten heel and a shrug or cropped jacket if you want to add casual to formal.
Formal gowns come in practically almost every color and flattering sizes for any woman. Picking through all the different styles of formal gowns, there’s truly one that can match anyone’s personality and existing wardrobe.
