Types of Gynastics Leotards

The first leotard was invented in 1880's by a French acrobat named Jules Leotard. Jules Leotard also created the first flying trapeze. Leotards today are worn by professional and amateurs in gymnastics and dancing. There are a few different types of leotards that are worn today.

Distinguishing the different kinds of leotards has to include the fabric that is used in the manufacturing of the garments, as well as the design that is represented. Leotards are generally sleeveless and legless garment that covers the body while allowing free movements of the limbs. The design is why the garments are used by acrobats, gymnasts, dancers, figure skaters, circus performers, and athletes.

The different fabrics used to make leotards were made primarily from polyester until the 1980's. Lycra and spandex fabric began making most leotards. Most gymnasts now wear leotards that incorporate velour, nylon, mesh, foil and iridescent hologram fabrics. Recent additions to leotard design include adding sequins and jewels to create a more attractive costume.

  • Gymnasts wear training leotards for practice that are simple in design. The training leotards are durable because they are worn regularly. Some gymnasts also wear shorts or leggings during practice. Competition leotards are made from colorful fabric with designs.

  • The competition leotards are creative and flashy to grab the attention of the judges.

  • Gymnasts wear rhythmic leotards for competition. Most rhythmic leotards are skin colored with sequins and rhinestones covering the fabric.

  • Two-piece leotards include small shorts and a crop top. Two-piece leotards are used only for practice.
