Types of Home Improvement Hardware Tools

Doing your own home improvements can be rewarding and save money.  Many small repairs can be done easily by a homeowner. There are tools required, but the list of what you need to start is not very long. Start y buying the basics and over time you can put together a full set of tools, but to start you only need a basic set to get started.

Toolbox

You will need a way to transport your tools around the house. A high-quality toolbox also protects your tools and keeps them all in one place, making them easier to find when you need them. Rubber-bottomed, hard side and canvas bag styles are available.

Reversible Drill

A 3/8-inch corded drill is the best choice for household work. A corded drill is lighter and cheaper than a rechargeable drill and they do not run out of battery power in the middle of a job. A bit set with a variety of sizes will be needed as well.

Plug Tester

A simple plug tester with two probes and a light will allow you to test plugs before beginning electrical work.

Strippers/Wire Cutters

Buy a tool that has both wire stripping and cutting functions built in. These are of use during electrical repairs to strip insulation from wires or cut through them.

Tape Measure

A 16-foot tape measure will be helpful for household repairs. Tapes that are three-fourths of an inch wide will stay open best and be easiest to use.

Chisel

Chisels are meant to be struck with hammers as part of their purpose, so buy one made of steel rather than wood or plastic. A half-inch steel chisel is suitable for most ordinary household jobs.

Screwdrivers

A matched set of screwdrivers in an assortment of shapes and sizes will serve most needs. Look for a set that has Phillips head, standard and hex screwdrivers.

Vise Grips

These locking pliers are useful for plumbing repairs. They are adjustable so they can clamp to almost any size or type of pipe.

Needle-Nose Pliers

Needle-nose pliers are ideal for electrical work due to their long, thin jaws. Choose a pair with a wire-cutting blade near the hinge.

Hammer

Hammers come in a variety of materials, sizes and types. A 16-ounce hammer with a rubber grip, straight claw and a fiberglass or steel handle is a good choice for household repairs.

Torpedo Level

A 9-inch torpedo level will help provide precision when hanging kitchen cabinets, pictures or anything else that needs to hang straight.

Utility Knife

Choose a utility knife that has a disposable blade. A model that keeps additional blades in the handle is a good idea. Utility knives can be used to open packaging, cut carpet and trim drywall.
