Types of Water Restoration Science Projects for Kids

Teaching children about water restoration and conservation is an important part of helping them learn how we are connected to the environment. There are many science projects that can be done by children to show them the importance of freshwater in our environment.

School Age Children

School age children can see the difference in water filtration by plants. Take three clear containers and fill the bottom with sand from a lake, beach or stream. Put clear water in all three containers. In one container, place aquatic freshwater plant life. These plants can be bought at local aquarium stores. In another container, set up a freshwater filtration system, such as one you would use in a fish aquarium. The last container leave with just sand and water. Place all three containers outside for three weeks. Do not place them in direct sunlight, but in an area where they will have both sun and shade. Each day note the cloudiness of each container. Take the pH balance of the water and note this as well. At the end determine which water remained the most clear.

Young Children

Using a poster board, have the child draw 100 water drops. Color 97 of the water drops dark blue to indicate the amount of salt water on the Earth's surface. Color two of the water drops light blue to indicate the amount of freshwater on the Earth. Color the last water drop red. Underneath the red water drop write things that humans do that involves the use of fresh water.
