Using your Home Phone Number as a Fax Number

Using your home phone number as a fax number is easier than it may sound. If you don't send or receive faxes often it may be a waste of money to pay for an individual line just for the fax line. It may not also be possible to use the Internet in all cases. Fortunately you can set up your fax machine directly to your home phone line.

It's possible to use your home phone number as a fax line from time to time. This is a good way to send the occasional fax if it becomes necessary.

  • Unplug the home phone from the wall and plug the line into the fax machine. You'll also need to have the machine set up near a power outlet so you can plug it in.

  • Pick up the receiver on the fax machine to make sure you have a dial tone. If you don't and the home phone works without issue you may want to troubleshoot the fax machine.

  • Send a test fax to someone you know to make sure the machine is working. If you get a confirmation printout the machine is working.

  • Send the fax you need.

  • If you want to use the machine a few more times before you pack it away you may want to configure the settings. This will allow you to use the home phone without unplugging the fax machine. Follow the directions provided in the fax machines manual to set up when the fax machine will pick up, whether it will always print a confirmation and how long to store faxes that are being sent. This will allow you to receive faxes anytime.
