What are the Prerequisites for Veterinary School?

Veterinary School Requirements

College graduates may continue their education and become veterinarians. Potential candidates for veterinarian programs must meet specific requirements to enroll in this specialized school. Because each veterinarian program is different, candidates will need to check with individual schools for specific requirements.

  • High undergraduate GPA - Veterinary schools require an above average undergraduate GPA for admission. The higher the undergraduate GPA, the more likely the student will be accepted into the school.

  • Pre-vet courses - Before applying to vet school, candidates must show that they have passed required pre-vet coursework. This may include undergraduate level science and animal health courses.

  • Completed application packet – All applicants must complete and timely submit an admission's packet. This packet will include the school application, transcripts and possibly a personal statement or essay.

  • Work experience - All potential veterinary school candidates must be able to prove some work experience with animals. This can include farm work, volunteer work and paid work at a veterinary hospital. Many schools encourage undergraduates who are interested in attending veterinary school to apply for jobs early. The more work experience a candidate can present, the higher her chances of getting into her choice veterinary school.

  • High GRE score - The GRE is a required entrance exam for most graduate level schools. Scoring high on the GRE can ensure a candidate gains a spot at veterinary school.

  • Personal interview - Most veterinary schools have a personal interview with the top selectees. Prepare to answer questions about work experience and undergraduate coursework. Be ready to state your intentions for attending veterinary school and how you think you will be a good fit for the program.
