When Should You Apply to Veterinary School?

What are the Prerequisites for Veterinary School?

Many undergraduate students apply for veterinary school each year. The top veterinary schools in the United States accept only the best and most promising undergraduates. If you are thinking of applying to veterinary school, start preparing now to ensure you have met the prerequisites for your chosen veterinary program.

  • Pre-veterinary coursework - Most veterinary schools require students to complete certain science and health courses before the student will be considered for admission. Required courses typically include animal health, biology and natural sciences.

  • High GPA - A high GPA makes a candidate a competitive choice for veterinary school. Many schools list a minimum required GPA for entrance into the veterinary program.

  • High GRE exam score - The GRE is a general graduate school admission exam. It tests a student’s ability to think and reason on a graduate level. Check with specific schools to determine the lowest GRE score accepted for entrance. The higher the GRE score, the more competitive the candidate.

  • Job experience - Many veterinary schools require potential students to have previous experience working with animals. This can be as simple as volunteering time at an animal shelter or interning at a local veterinary clinic.

  • Completed application packet - The application packet for veterinary school includes undergraduate transcripts, an application fee and a possible essay or personal statement. When submitting the application, do not omit details of your professional and academic achievements.

  • Personal interview - Once all prerequisites have been met, candidates will be invited to attend a personal interview. Be prepared to answer questions about your desire to enroll in veterinary school. You may also be asked about job experience, volunteer work and undergraduate studies.
