How Does Getting Dentures Work?

What To Eat With Dentures

A common concern about wearing dentures is that you will need to give up all of the food that you enjoy. Fortunately, this is not entirely true and it is possible to eat all of the foods that you would under normal circumstances. You should not, however, start eating all types of foods right away; some foods are best avoided altogether.

  • Soft foods are the first type of food that you can eat when you get your dentures. Pudding, cooked vegetables, soup and soft fruit are some of the items that you can enjoy without worry as you become accustomed to your new teeth and after.

  • Denture wearers can eat most crunchy foods, such as celery or corn on the cob once they've grown comfortable and confident in chewing with their dentures. Care should be taken however, to avoid biting into overly hard items such as hard candy or popcorn kernels so that the dentures do not accidentally become cracked. When biting into hard fruits such as apples, and other crunchy items a dental adhesive can be helpful to ensure that the teeth stay in your mouth.

  • Certain meats, such as steak or ribs have a tendency to be tough on teeth. They can, however, still be enjoyed despite wearing dentures. Chop up steaks and other difficult to eat meats when you first get your dentures. As time progresses you may feel more comfortable biting into tender meats, however you should continue to cut tougher meats into bite size, manageable portions.

  • Sticky items such as caramel, gum or taffy can be problematic when it comes to your dentures. They will adhere to the teeth and become difficult to remove. Take this into consideration prior to eating foods that are known for being overly sticky and avoid eating them altogether if possible.
