What Is the Meaning of Esthetics?

What are Some Jobs With Medical Esthetics?

Estheticians are cosmetologists with special training in skin and facial care. Estheticians in the medical field make the highest salary of all estheticians as they receive special training. Jobs in the medical esthetic field are varied and involve working with doctors and nurses.

Plastic Surgery

Medical estheticians working in plastic surgery offices prepare patients for surgery by preparing skin, performing lymphatic drainage and applying makeup after surgery. Preparing skin for plastic surgery helps patients heal faster, as does performing lymphatic drainage on patients. Lymphatic drainage performed before and after surgery helps stimulate a patient's immunology responses and decrease swelling. Estheticians also apply makeup to the areas of bruised skin. Some patients learn how to apply the makeup themselves from the esthetician.

Dermatology

Dermatology offices employ estheticians (under the watchful eye of a licensed professional) to help patients with skin disorders and diseases. Dermatologic estheticians perform pore-cleansing facials, chemical peels, and use lasers to remove hair and unwanted pigmentation. Pore-cleansing facials help to facilitate penetration of skin products or medications for acne and other skin diseases. Chemical peels help to promote healthy, younger skin by peeling off the top layer of the dermis. Finally, estheticians use lasers to remove hair, unwanted pigmentation and stimulate the rejuvenation of the skin.

Medical Spa

Medical spa estheticians work under the supervision of physicians or other licensed professionals. Waxing, therapeutic massage, facials and chemical peels are performed in this setting. More intensive services such as Botox injections, facial fillers and tattoo removal are also performed by medical spa estheticians.
