What are Some Ways a Company Uses Corporate Philanthropy?

Last year corporate philanthropy raised over $227 billion. Companies use philanthropy to promote social causes. From the environment to helping further education by providing resources, time and money. In most cases, corporations want a positive reputation to be associated with their name; therefore they choose carefully which charities they want their names attached to.

  • Continental Airlines: They provide airfare for free. The Jack and Jill Late Stage Cancer Foundation works with this airline to provide free airfare for cancer patients. Additionally, the foundation provides free hotel stays with corporations such as the Marriott and the Ritz-Carlton. The foundation has raised $4 million in the past three years while working with these corporations who provide philanthropy services by donating services.

  • Wal-Mart: They provided $288,091,839 in donations in 2009. Through their self-titled "Wal-Mart Foundation," they strive to provide individuals with support throughout their local communities. Wal-Mart’s charities are focused on support in the areas of education, health and hunger.

  • Nike: They give across the globe. In 2009 Nike's contributions totaled $78,822,308. Nike and NoVo Foundation World Bank work together to contribute to their foundation, "The Girl Effect," to empower adolescent girls around the world. By educating young girls today on health issues and by giving them opportunities to further their education, Nike shapes the future of tomorrow.

  • Coca-Cola Company: The company donated $75,302,699 in 2009. Through donations, volunteer efforts, and providing their time for community service, Coca Cola supports causes that educate communities on healthy living and a "greener" environment through local community initiatives.
