What is Hydroponics?

Hydroponics is the art of growing plants without soil. Planted in nutrient minerals and other materials, Hydroponic plants receive the right amount of nutrition they need easier than plants that are in soil. These plants grow faster, better and yield more fruitation or flowers.

The word Hydroponics is derived from the latin word, meaning "working water." Basically, it is growing plants without soil, which is actually more complex than it may seem. In place of soil, Hydroponics uses mineral nutrient solutions. The plan can grow directly in the nutrient minerals or along with gravel, perlite, coconut husk, or mineral wool.

Hydroponic works well because it gives the plant the right amount of nutrition it needs to grow well. The plant receives nutrients with little effort, as opposed to the roots working to get nutrients from the soil. In fact, if you planted two plants, one in soil and the other using Hydroponics, the latter would grow faster, better and have greater yield. Many home growers and commercial food producers are adapting their growing to Hydroponic methods because of these results.

A summary of the benefits of Hydroponics:

  • No soil is necessary

  • The water in the plant stays inside and is reused, which lowers costs of watering

  • Nutrition levels can be controled to lower nutrition costs

  • Harvesting is easier

  • Stable production to cause high yields

  • No pollution from nutrition is released into the air

  • Getting rid of pests/diseases is easier because you can move the container, as opposed to a plant in the ground
