What is an Oil Filter Wrench?
An oil filter wrench is often referred to as a filter wrench. This specialty tool lends a helping hand when attempting to take out your old oil filter and install a new one during a home oil change. Oil filter wrenches are not universal and many different varieties are available to fit the model of the oil filter located in your car. If you are going to be doing your own oil changes you should invest in an oil filter wrench.
An oil filter wrench can be an invaluable tool in the removing of your old oil filter. Oil filters can often become stuck due to the constant friction of the engine; this tightens the oil filter tighter than it was put on and can make removal difficult. Oil filters can also become coated with grease and sludge that kicks off the engine; this can also make your oil filter difficult to remove by hand without the use of an oil filter wrench.
One size does NOT fit all - You should check with your local auto parts store and let them know what you are looking for. They will be able to tell you which oil filter wrench will work with your make and model automobile.
Different styles - An oil filter comes in many different styles and which one you need depends on the location of your oil filter and whether you need to access the filter from the top or bottom. The different styles that are available to access your oil filter from the bottom are cap type, spider type and cam action type. If you need to access the oil filter from above there are nylon strap and square drive types.
Manufacturers recommendations - Manufacturers of oil filters do not recommend that you use a wrench to tighten an oil filter into place because too much pressure may be applied. Oil filters are only made out of materials such as fiberglass and may be damaged easily. When putting on your new oil filter, ensure that you follow manufacturer's recommendations.
