What to Look for in Security Doors
When it comes to protecting a home, the right security is necessary. Security doors are popular in a number of homes; however, not all products are created equally. There are several things to look for when purchasing this type of product. These important things mean the difference between protecting your home and allowing danger in.
- Door quality - Look for a security door made of a strong, hard wood or metal. Burglars may be enticed to enter a door without these two main features. Metal and hardwood are strong enough to withstand pressure.
- Width - After choosing the correct door, check the density. It should be 2 inches thick or more. The thicker the material, the better it holds against intruders.
- Reinforced Frames - The frame must be made of the same material as the security door. Also, check the frame's width and proportions. It should fit in the doorway perfectly. However, metal door frames withstand kicking in better than any other material, due to metal-on-metal benefit. When door locks or deadbolts are against wood, the door breaks very easily from the strength of metal locks. They are harder to kick in when forced against a reinforced metal frame.
- Chains - Using a strong chain lets you see those on the other side of the door without compromising safety. The chain should only allow the door to open a couple of inches. Chains become a second defense against intruders.
- Peep holes or Viewers - This security feature can help secure your home. It allows you to see who is at the door without opening it.
- Locks - Deadbolts and other similar types can be broken on regular home-installed doors. But when they are attached to security doors with reinforced metal frames they withstand home invasions and burglaries. Choose double-cylinder locks with a grade of one. This is the highest grade recommended for its ability to hold up to heavy use or pressure.
- No windows or glass - A good security door should not have glass or a window near the locks or doorknob. It can be smashed to gain entry. You can find security doors with unbreakable transparent material if you want a view to the outside.
