Why Do LiPo Batteries Explode?

As society advances in the areas of technology, new batteries have to be created to power our devices. LiPo batteries are small batteries that are capable of holding more than 3 times the power of traditional nickel batteries. This makes them common in cell phones, GPS units, MP3 players and other personal electronics. While this sounds great, using these batteries with the wrong chargers can create fires and explosions.

Lithium polymer batteries (also known as LiPo batteries) power many of our personal electronics. These batteries can be found in many items that we use every day. Understanding how to keep them from creating dangerous situations is vital.

Fire Danger

LiPo batteries have to be charged with specific chargers and using a specific voltage. If a battery is charged on the wrong charger it can cause a fire. If the battery is receiving more of a charge than necessary it can create a dangerous situation.

Explosions

If your battery is showing signs of wear, or the charger doesn't seem to be working as well suddenly, you should troubleshoot these problems. If a LiPo battery receives a reverse charge the battery pack can explode. This isn't common, but it's entirely possible. If the charger isn't charging your device anymore, look at purchasing a new charger. If this doesn't work, the battery may need to be replaced. Faulty wiring at the wall outlet can also cause this to happen.

Staying Safe

It can be tempting to use a single charger for all of your devices. This is strongly advised against however. Only charge what you need when you need it. If possible, try to keep the chargers with the device. If this isn't possible, label the cords coming from the charger. This way you won't accidentally plug your cell phone in to your mp3 charger. This is one of the most common reasons batteries catch fire or explode with LiPo batteries.

Also make sure you replace battery cases that look damaged. Keep the device out of direct sunlight or extreme heat or cold. This can also create a dangerous situation.
