Writing Grants for Women Entrepreneurs

A grant is government money that you can receive for specific purposes and you never have to pay it back. For women entrepreneurs it can be a challenge finding a grant that will serve to put their dreams into action. For more information on where to find the right grants and how to go about benefitting from them, read on.

  1. Know where to look. You can check online and at reference library databases. Small business grants will usually be at the state level.

  2. Have a draft of a business plan and description. Be able to describe every aspect of your business, include charts and projections like a presentation.

  3. Contact granting agencies or grant providers to find out the details and familiarize yourself with the process. Ask any questions you may have about details that seem unclear.

  4. Write grant applications or hire a professional grant writer. Your best bet is pay close attention to the instructions in the application. Grant proposals can take time but anyone can write one.

  5. Answer all the questions asked and then answer the ones you think should have been asked. Leave no question unanswered so that your grant proposal does not seem incomplete. Incomplete proposals usually get put aside.

  6. Include letters of recommendation and any testament that shows why or how your business will be successful or beneficial to your community. Consider high ranking officials and professionals.

  7. Be patient. You may have a timeframe in mind, but it will most likely not work that way. You can wait a few weeks and then call to check on your progress. It will be overwhelming for grantors to respond to each application, and it will take time.

  8. Have a thick skin and don’t give up. If you don’t get one grant, try for another. When you are rejected just dust yourself off and try again. Grantors cannot help everybody, but if you give up no one can help you.
