I just finished a book that had tears running down my face while I was sitting on one of the most incredible beaches in the world watching my two kids play in the Gulf of Mexico. My two kids who don't see color and have a bunch of African American cousins Seven Laurels was written by Linda Busby Parker from Mobile, Alabama. It is a tragic story about hope, a dramatic story of victory amist the loss of a child. I wrote a story recently about my Grandmother's experience i...

I just finished Atlas Shrugged. It is a punishing read. Over a thousand pages and filled with long speeches that you can rarely find outside of a university Philosphy course. It is an important book. In fact, it is a collection of ideas that every American should understand. While Libertarians use to to justify no goverment, Liberals call it ammoral, and Republicans basterdize it for political means, at its core it has some powerful simple ideas. At i...

As some of you noticed, my daughter recently asked if I was part of the first Great Depression. This was interesting in a couple of ways, one she must think I am really old and she is concerned we are in the second. She is under 12 so I guess we should not worry too much, but this is a fundamentally different perspective than my son would have had a few years ago before the crash. We have talked a bit about innovation in the Great Depression, but I continue to want to know what ha...

I am just finishing The FountainHead by Ayn Rand. It is a great book and a tough read. I was struck by how man of the characters that you meet in real like just at less of an extreme. I wonder if some of this plays out in small ways in today's world. I am not sure I agree with Rand's view that the purest Roark is the ideal man. I can understand some of my intellectual elite friends who look at the world this way. It certainly represents the world view...

Right after the Open Table IPO last week, I took the time to read a book that had been sitting on my shelf for a while. While I am still dedicated to reading the series on the Great Depression, I needed something a bit more positive so I picked up a book by Julia Angwin from the Wall Street Journal on the creation of MySpace. Since I was an investor in a couple and a founder of another social network that was being developed around this time, the book was fasinating. W...

I am still working on few books. I have taken to reading them in paralelll so this is tough to get done. I am currently working on three: The Fountainhead by Ayn Rand, which I need to finish while my son reads Atlas Shrugged which was on my list. Riding the Rails. Teenagers on the Move during the Great Depression by Errol Uys. This is an interesting book that shares stories directly from people who were still alive when it was written in 2000. In t...

I saw this great quote by Rip in BusinessWeek today. "The jet engine, the helicopter, FM broadcasting, fiberglass, nylon, photocopying, radar, sticky tape, and instant film were all invented during the Great Depression." I wonder what the Sticky Tape of this 2nd Depression is..
