Cleveland Chevrolet Drivers Learn How To Jump a Car

Mar 18, 2014

Sometimes it is our own silly mistakes like leaving the dome light on, but sometimes it is outside elements like the cold weather that drain your battery and put an instant stop to your day. No matter what the cause is, our Cleveland area Chevrolet is going to teach you how to get the juice flowing again.

How To Jump Start a CarHow To Jump Start Your Car Battery

First, one of the most useful things you can keep in your trunk (besides your clothes that you convince yourself you will take out) is a jump-start box. These are small, rechargeable boxes that can jump your battery without the need of another car.

Sans jump-box, at all times you should have jumper cables in your car or this whole tutorial will mean nothing (unless another driver has them available). It is your car and your responsibility to be prepared. If you do not have them, visit our Cleveland area Chevrolet service center today!

Open the hoods of both cars and attached the red cable (positive) to the dead car's positive (+) battery terminal and the other end to positive terminal of the car that will be jumping yours. Now, connect the black cable (negative) to the negative (-) battery terminal of the jumping car, and then attach the other end to a bare metal surface on your car. This will create a ground for the jump. These cables should not be touching any engine parts!

Start the jumping car's engine and let it idle for a little bit, then start your car's engine and let it idle for a bit. Your car is now jumped, so remove the black cable from your car, then from theirs. Remove the red cable from their car, and then from yours.

Not so bad right? This is a simple, but crucial skill to have. Be sure to inspect your cables for exposed wires or tears regularly, and if you need any other parts please call our auto repair center near Cleveland at (440) 328-8486.
