Drug lord 'Don Pepe' booked into Ventura County jail Drug lord 'Don Pepe' booked into Ventura County jailVENTURA COUNTY STAR, CALIF. | JOHN SCHEIBE | Oct. 16--Mexican drug lord Jose Antonio Medina Arreguin was transported to Ventura County on Wednesday and booked into the main jail more than six months after being arrested in Mexico on a warrant issued in the county.Arreguin, who's nickname is "Don Pepe," is known as the King of Heroin in Mexico.Arreguin was taken into custody on March 24 in a remote area ofMichoacan after Ventura County prosecutors issued a warrant for his arrest. He made an appearance in Ventura County Superior Court on Thursday, but his arraignment was continued to Oct. 22 at 9 a.m. He is being held on $750,000 bail. The 36-year-old Mexican national is alleged to have transported more than 400 pounds of heroin a month into California over a three-year period. He is charged with conspiracy to transport heroin for sale from a non-contiguous county, with a special allegation that the drugs exceeded 40 kilos, according to a criminal complaint filed in January 2009.Ventura County prosecutor Ryan Wright said in March his office worked with the U.S. Department of State to obtain the arrest warrant for Arreguin.A team of narcotics officers with Ventura County Agency Team had worked with state and federal officials to trace the drug operation back to Mexico. At the time of Arreguin's arrest, District Attorney Greg Totten said his office also worked with the Mexican government on the case.Arreguin faces 29 years in prison if convicted. The criminal complaint alleges he orchestrated the shipment, delivery and distribution of heroin throughout California. It also states that authorities intercepted phone calls in which large shipments of the drug coming into California were discussed as well as its storage in stash houses for later distribution.Prosecutors allege that cash payments of $100,000 to $260,000 were smuggled back into Mexico about once a week.Local police had long believed heroin was coming into the county from the Michoacan state of Mexico, but it wasn't until they had accumulated enough evidence to get a wiretap on the phones of Salvador Alvarez, an Oxnard man with several prior drug arrests, and Julio Ramirez, 50, of Downey that they were able to begin building a case.Wiretaps showed Arreguin had at least 20 phone conversation withAlvarez, in which drug transactions inVentura County were discussed over a three-month period beginning in November 2007.Alvarez was arrested in January 2008 as part of a drug raid that led to the biggest heroin bust in Ventura Countyhistory. The raid also targeted a home in Downey. In all, some 131 pounds of heroin were confiscated as well as 28 pounds of methamphetamine.Alvarez is now in prison.-- Staff writers Scott Hadly and Teresa Rochester contributed to this reportSolution Bail Bonds (805) 484-8393www.SOLUTIONBAILBONDS.com
