MAGNOLIA -- For Dave and Michelle Bruner, the success of their young and growingbusinessis sweet. Two years ago, when Dave, then a C-5 pilot, was retiring at age 39 from the Air Force, Michelle convinced him to drop his idea of becoming a state trooper, worried it would continue to keep him away from the family too much. Instead she found a business opportunity online: Chocolates with printed words and images. They investigated, invested and studied, and on Aug. 16, 2006, Dave returned home to Magnolia with $4,000 of chocolate and the machinery, softwareand other items they needed to set up You Oughtta Be on Chocolates. Anything you can print on paper you can print on chocolate, Dave said, although he and Michelle won't print anything racy, and they heed copyright restrictions. The Bruners are one of 130 businesses worldwide licensed for the Chocolography Food Imaging System. Essentially, an image is scanned, manipulated with software and then printed using food dye on royal icing over the chocolate. They have purchased all of Delaware as their territory, but they also have an extensive online business, thanks to Google advertising, a toll-free phone number, prominent participation in fundraisers and Dave's increasing promotional skills. He learned the power of recognizable faces from his marketing, which featured his son, Matthew, eating a lollipop with his face on it; early testing that used photos from his wedding album; and a decorated van. Michelle, an accountant by training, is afinancemanager for TransCore E-ZPass. Dave didn't have any business training, but he has shown an entrepreneurial spirit over the past two years. "Wherever I go, I look for opportunities, because it doesn't come to you," he said. His networking led to chocolate displays in three Delaware firms, and he regularly bandies about ideas with fellow small-businessman Dave Lewis, who co-owns with his wife Rayann the Mail Zone, which Dave Bruner uses for shipping. "We try to strategize how to help each other," said Dave Lewis, whose establishment is the first one to carry the chocolate line. They have since split the cost of advertising, and Lewis is happy that he can add chocolate to his printing capabilities, which already include paper, banners and the like. The Bruners have also learned a lot about chocolate. They store it at 70 to 75 degrees to keep it in the best condition, and ship it insulated boxes that are guaranteed to hold up to 100-degree temperatures for five days. Dave Bruner is also talking about creating chocolate pictures for ice cream cakes at the Camden Dairy Queen. "Chocolate has no enemies," he said. "Everybody loves it or knows somebody who loves it." That said, if a chocolate bar isn't your thing (like Dave himself, who favors fruit as a treat), he also prints images on Oreo-like cookies. You Oughtta Be on Chocolates does most of the manufacturing in the Bruners' home, but they also have a mobile unit that they take to weddings and other events to create individualized party favors. He said that the firm's top sellers are coins andbusiness cards-- life-size, thicker and "better tasting."
