Since the establishment of destination tourism in the 1970s, the local economy has diversified, and today the region is the center of operations for companies servicing Central Florida. Orlando is also home to the University of Central Florida, one of the largest universities by student enrollment in the nation. Historians date Orlando's name to around 1837, when a soldier named Orlando Reeves allegedly died in the area during the Second Seminole War. It seems, however, that Orlando Reeves (sometimes Rees) operated a sugar mill and plantation about 30 miles (50 km) to the north at Spring Garden in Volusia County, and pioneer settlers simply found his name carved into a tree and assumed it was a marker for his grave site. They then referred to the area as "Orlando's grave" and later simply Orlando. A memorial beside Lake Eola designates the spot where the city's namesake fell. Orlando has a warm and humid subtropical climate, and there are two major seasons each year. One of those seasons is hot and rainy, lasting from the break of June until late September (roughly coinciding with the Atlantic hurricane season). The other is the dry season (October through May) that brings more moderate temperatures and less frequent rainfall. How Can I Improve My Pick-Hand Technique?
"There are many thoughts out there on correct pick hand positioning. Being a teacher I see all of them almost everyday. What works best for me and what I tell my students is if you first make a fist with your picking hand. Take your pointer finger and move it up until your first knuckle on your pointer finger is inline with the second row of knuckles on the rest of your fingers. This gives you the shape like you were frogging someone. Now take your palm and rest it on your bridge and use your bridge as a pivot point where you only pick from the wrist; that gives you a very closed hand shape a la Eddie Van Halen, Reb Bleach, Dimebag Darrell to name a few. I don't like that closed fist shape personally makes my picking hand to tight and stiff witch is not a good thing, but this technique works for a lot of people. Still holding the pick the same way I open my hand up more for a looser feel, and anchor my pinky on the guitar body right below the high E string. (Many players will tell you this is a bad habit, if it’s not broken why fix it?) Watch John Petucci play it's just like that. What helped me out most was going and watching players of all styles and learning a lot of their songs to find what technique work best for all styles and for you."
