Candle Safety

Welcome to Candles-N-Baskets Safety Informational page.  I want to inform you of the importance of safety when purchasing candles for your home.  Not all candles you purchase in the stores are safe to burn. There are several things you need to know and what to look for.  You may not know this but, candles have been the cause of fires in many homes. Between 1999 - 2002, 40% of candle fires were in the bedroom, 17% in the livingroom, 9% started when a curtain, blind, or drapery ignighted.  Most consumers do not realize what to look for when purchasing candles, or stop to think where they are placed to burn in their homes.  The most important step to take is to know who the manufacturer is. Do some research, and see if there is any information on whether or not that manufacturers candle may have caused any of the fires reported by candles.  The second step is to look at the wick. Is it in the center of the candle? If it isn't, DO NOT PURCHASE IT! This can cause the candle not to correctly burn. It can blow out the side.  Most consumers do not read the warning lable on their candles either. It should tell you to cut your wick down to 1/4",  leaving the wick to high will have a high flame. Here is an example of a badly placed wick.  Where you place your candle when you want to burn it, is also very important. Always place it on a plate or dish that is not going to get too hot , or will melt or burn. Always place it high enough where children can not reach it. Take a moment and look around the room. Don't place it on a book shelf when there is a shelf above it. Not near any open windows so the flame can't be blown around. Do not place it near any curtains, blinds or drapery which could be blown in to the flame.  Do not place near any radiators or heaters. Just remember to always take a look around and place it in the safest palce possible.  Next week, I'm going to talk to you about different wicks and waxes. There is a difference!  Till next week, Think Safety! There are many different kinds of waxes. There  is paraffin, soy,  and gels.  There are different kinds of each of these waxes. I use paraffin wax. It is called 4045 Eh. With paraffin wax, there is container, pillar, votive waxes. Did you know that there is a difference?  Container waxes are softer. This is very important to nkow. If the wick in a container is not centered, the glass could blow up. If the wax is not container wax, the glass can get too hot and blow up.  Wicks are different too. There are many different kinds of wicks, different sizes too. This is why it's so important for chandlers to test all of the candles they produce. The right wick for the right wax, the right wax for the container.  If you have ever read the warning lable on a candle you have purchased, it states, cut wick to 1/4". This is also very important. If you don't cut it, the flame can be way to high. Here is an example of the right size flame, and an example of a flame is too high. Even after burning your candle for awhile and have blown it out, always cut your wick before burning it again. Never burn your candle for more than 4 hours. I hope this information is helpful. Stop in to my site sometime and see if there is anything that interests you.  Thank you. Ellen http://candles-n-baskets.com
