Keep it Simple

Sometimes the easiest thing to do is over complicate something. I have been training in the martial arts for 26 years now. In that time, I have seen some things. I was always looking for an art that constantly evolved and grew. Truth be told, I thought with the coming of Mixed Martial Arts, I had finally found what I was looking for.  I was wrong. While the techniques taught in Mixed Martial Arts are quite effective if trained properly, I found it still lacked what it was I was looking for. I have always been a firm believer that there is a difference between fighting and self-defense. As an avid point sparring competitor, I enjoyed the excitement of competitively exchanging techniques in a respectful and sportsman like manner. I found that this is very much the same thing in Mixed Martial Arts, although the rules of engagement differ. I spent the better of 7 years travelling and studying with different reality based instructors. While many of their approaches to teaching and execution may be different, they all had one major thing in common.  Techniques should be economical and simple. Throughout my years, I have seen some amazing martial arts and martial artists. They can throw some of the most amazing, athletic, acrobatic kicks you have ever seen. It is truly impressive. But it would NEVER work in the street. Again, my philosophy has always been to train what you will use and stop wasting time on nonsense. Keep it simple. Hozen-Do is built on a foundation of strong basics, is easy to retain, and highly effective in high stress situations. Keeping things basic is essential to your survival in any self-defense situation.  You will not have time to apply some elaborate technique.
