Do you know me?

I've been in business here in downtown Taylor for almost 11 years (three years on 4th street, almost 8 on Main Street, across from the Howard Theatre, and I get very little local traffic. I get customers from Australia to Zimbabwe and cannot for the life of me figure out how they ever found this tiny little country town. I do get some local traffic, I know, because they come through the door exclaiming "I didn't know you were here!". How does one advertise my type of business successfully? Any advertising should result in at least 3 times the cost of that advertising. There is no radio station here. They've tried but never succeeded. There used to be two newspapers but after almost two years (or maybe more -- can't remember now) the second one gave up. The other newspaper has been around a long time but most of the content consists of sports, comics and advertising, with very little actual news (unless it's related to sports or social events involving the elite) so the readership is limited. I've tried advertising (as a matter of fact, I still owe them money) by way of placing a "bring this coupon in for a discount/gift/whatever" and no one has ever redeemed a single one of them. I not only never tripled my advertising dollar with the newspaper, I short-changed myself by wasting the hard-earned dollars. About now, you're asking yourself "what kind of business does she have?" if after all these years I still need more business and "how could she have stayed in business all this time?" if I've hung in this long. Well, I'll tell you. First, I have no more fingernails after hanging on, and firmly believe the old adage "do what you love and the money will follow". Which boils down to being plain old stubborn. Now in answer to what kind of business do I have.  In a nutshell I have a second-hand store. Antique, vintage or just plain used merchandise from jewelry, clothing, hats and other accessories (men's and women's),  artwork, music (LPs, 78s and 45s), and sheet music to books -- my main focus  (also antique, vintage or just plain used) back-issue magazines,  postcards, old photos, and cooking (and other) ephemera.  But the most important thing is my website, www.NovelShoppe.com. It used to work great for me but since the advent of super-sites, sales have dropped a little. Couldn't beat 'em, so I joined 'em. In addition to selling books through my own website, I also sell through a cooperative of independent booksellers called www.TomFolio.com, and Amazon and Barnes and Noble. Just in case you're interested in finding out if I have a book you're looking for, my books are discounted at the TomFolio site because they don't charge me an arm and a leg to list there, like Amazon and B&N; does. Bottom line is this: After trying several things, I still can't figure out how to advertise and make it pay off!
