After calling and leaving numerous messages for the officers that took my car, I finally received a release form after almost 2 months. Should I have to pay the near $500 towing fees?

The tow company is only doing their job. If the call was a PD (police /state patrol/ cops) what ever you want to call them -- you are charged a higher fee and that fee varies on how long it took to tow the car from the scene. The storage for a vehicle can be anywhere from $10 to $35 a day, depending on why the car was towed, impounded and stored -- the tow company can not release the vehicle with out the proper release. If you feel that it was unjust in the fees that you had to pay -- you need to contact the office which requested the impound and why they took so long to release it.

I do not know the specifics for the towing laws in MI, but here in Texas if you file with the justice of the peace in the precinct where your car was towed within 14 days of picking up your car they will give you a hearing to determine just that. We have a form that goes with our invoices that we give the customer that goes over this and tells them their rights. Check into MI towing laws and maybe that will help. You should be able to find something online. I'm not sure who governs towing and storage there but find that state entity and you will find your answers. Good luck.

I don't have an answer and I wish I knew the legal aspect of it. Mine was held for 8 months before released and they wanted to charge me $6000.00. I couldn't come up with the money and when I did the total was $8900.00. It killed me. Its not fare, and I don't think that's fare. The investigation was done 3 days after my accident.

it depends on why your veh was stored, who put the hold on it,
in CA if a holdis put on a veh for evidence in a crime against you then there no charges to you but if it is the other way around the charges ars justified

if the towing company is not the police you must pay then sue the police if they kept your car for unjust reasons

$500 for 2 months of storage sounds very reasonable! Storage is $25 per day in our area, which would be $1500 in storage fees alone + plus tow charges + plus administrative fees.

Check to ensure that storage was assessed during the hold period.

you should pay and get the car released so no more fees accumulate, then explore if they acted legally. If not you can sign a complaint or take them to small claims court

Unless you can prove that you left those messages on the officer's voicemail, you may be responsible for these charges. This is why e-mail works best since you have a paper-trail to use in situations like this.
    Good luck
