Comprehensive Physical Damage — Pays for damage to your car that is not the result of an auto accident, such as theft, vandalism, fire, hail, natural disasters, hitting an animal, etc. Comprehensive coverage also requires a deductible, and will only pay as much as the car was worth before sustaining the damage.

Usually on an auto policy, you have three components:
Liability - cover damage (Physical damage) and injury (Personal Injury) to others.
Comprehensive - Damage to your vehicle for things like weather (i.e. hail damage, wind, falling tree limbs), vandalism and malicious mischief (self explanatory), acts of God, etc.
Collision - Cover damage to your vehicle when you collide with something (rocks, sign posts, objects on the road, another vehicle, etc.).
Most policies always require you to carry Comp AND Collision, especially if the vehicle is financed and required by the lender.
For older vehicles, especially those with a small Blue Book value, it is better to just carry Liability.
Hope this helps.
