Each state has their own towing laws and requirements. It is important to research the company you are choosing to see if they follow these laws and requirements. Are their uniforms, trucks and drivers clean and in good repair? They should be, but you won't know that until they show up to preform the service. Look at reviews on Yahoo, Bing, MerchantCircle or Google. Remember when your reading the reviews that it is usually an angry customer due to an impound situation where they parked in the wrong place or had their car stolen. In these situations the tow companies hands are tied in dealing with the situation.
The owner of the company I work for is very adamant in requiring he drivers to polish their trucks and to be clean and professional at all times. They are after all representing her and her company.
You get what you pay for. If the price is too good to be true then beware because usually the service is not too good.

As a private individual I would look for service (how long am I going to be waiting on the side of a busy interstate in 100 degree weather), then once I have chosen a company and they arrive, I am looking at how they are dressed (cut off shorts, jeans, greasy t-shirt, flip lops), how they handle themselves/my car (are they just throwing stuff around or are they taking their time/caring for my car), attitude (are they friendly, knowledgable or are they harsh, bitter, rude). At the end of the day it should be all about service. I want to be left with a good feeling even though I am in a bad situation (breakdown, accident). As a private individual I already have my guard up because the towing industry as a whole has a bad rap. If I can be left with a smile at the end of the ordeal, I would be a customer for life.
Now on the flip side, as a company owner, I know we have an uphill battle. Our industry doesn't have the best reputation. We strive to change that perception on a daily basis. Our driver is WreckMaster certified in towing & accident recovery, he shows up wearing a professionally cleaned, safety stripped & labeled uniform, including steel toed boots (for safety). We keep our en-route distance fairly close, we try not to exceed 15 miles out. If a customer is farther than that, we often refer a company closer to them (to minimize wait time when on side of a dangerous interstate), If we take the call, then we ensure we arrive in less than 25 minutes (rotation accident response time limit). We check on the customer first, explain what we will be doing & proceed to hook up the car (while ensuring site/customer safety).
As we say on our website, we treat our customers the way we would expect to be treated, with respect & professionalism. While this is an extremely difficult time in our economy, sometimes is just really is NOT about the almighty dollar, it is about the human factor & doing what is right!!!

Of course everyone thinks price. However...sometimes cheaper is not always better. Like the old saying goes sometimes you get what you pay for. This isn't always the case.Depending on many factors. Service sells it's self .Depending on what you need tiwed and how far..Also I strongly advise to make they are properly insured. I have seen many Tow companies who were not. I know from personal experience. I have use a cost effective tow truck company They provided Great service and also billed to my insurance company. Nothing out of pocket . So when looking for a Tow think about how far you need it towed anddo they work with your Insurance company or take pay plans and are they insured.

Everybody's going to say prices but how about honesty? I've heard horror stories about people having customized vehicles and the tow driver or the yard people that work there strips the customer's cars of stereo's, custom performance parts and even decals. Sometimes you gotta look further then just financial.

The number 1 thing we look for in a tow company is availibility. Second of all we check to make sure laws and regulations are followed in our state simply because here in WV there are a couple tow companies that dont seem to understand consumers bill or rights. People also want to know that there vehicle will be taken care of. If I had a towing Company, I would say something in my motto or tagline that we take care of our customers vehicles or something along those lines because when a customer needs you they care about 2 things how fast can you get to me and are you gonna take care of vehicle. We wish you the best as we know how hard it is to run a tow company now a days, there are so many regulations many of which isn't fair to the company.

I look for good service. If I have to pay a penny more to get good service, I will gladly do it. A towing company should also provide safe transportation of my cargo. They should keep time. Reviews do play a good part in determining too. If all the reviews by customers are bad, then run. But if in a sea of good comments there is only one or two bad reviews then that would be a good company. You could relate the bad review to a customer who likes complaining or that it was just a bad day. So good comments will have me calling the tow company

AS a dealer representative I look for a compan with a decent sized fleet. A fleet that can handle many vaities of vehicles from compacts to large trucks. do they have the permits to go on almost all roads in the area to retrieve a vehicle.what is the response time? will they move interstate for you? How is the price structure. Most importantly do they answer the phone and give it to you straight about how long and the cost. will they set up or create accouts for the right customers?
To me these things show me a company that is priogressive and looking to create long term relationship with companies and people in the area in which they operate.
