About Pinot Noir

There are many different varieties of wines enjoyed by wine connoisseurs and enthusiasts worldwide. One very popular variety or red wine is the Pinot Noir. This French variety is sometimes known as "Red Burgundy." However, it is now grown in many regions internationally, including California, Australia and Italy.

Background

Pinot Noir grapes are widely recognized as being a difficult grape to grow. This is primarily due to the fact that it requires a specific set of growing conditions, primarily warm days paired with cool nights. These conditions do not occur for lengthy periods of time in many parts of the world, making it tough to grow successfully. However, the extra effort is definitely worth the time, attention and investment.

The region that was originally able to grow the Pinot Noir grape is the Burgundy region of France. Today, however, several other regions throughout the world successfully grow Pinot Noir grapes, including California, Oregon, Australia, Italy and Germany.

Availability

Because the growing requirements for Red Burgundy or Pinot Noir grapes are so specific and stringent, its production volume is much smaller than other red wines. It is also typically a bit more expensive. There are some excellent quality Pinot Noirs that you can purchase for about $10, however. Pinot Noir from the Mark West winery is one example.

Flavor

Pinot Noirs are reminiscent of plums, tomatoes, sweet berries and cherries. Some will also denote earthy or woody flavors.

Food Pairing

Though the Pinot Noir can be enjoyed with any meal, it pairs particularly with fish, poultry, beef and pork. It also pairs well with spice foods and those with cream sauces. All in all, it is quite a versatile wine in terms of food pairings.
