Advantages of a Library

From iPads to Kindles, it might seem like the paperback book is becoming a fable in a world that is becoming more digital by the day. Despite the growing advances in technology and gadgetry, libraries are a reliable source for information and have been around for thousands of years. Libraries have stood the test of time and continue to meet the needs and interests of the public in a variety of ways.

  • Libraries bring communities together. Many libraries offer events on a weekly or monthly basis that cater to community residents of all ages and interests. Book clubs, children’s book readings, book sales, and even video game nights are becoming fairly common among libraries, and also help to make residents more aware and supportive of library services and events.

  • When the Internet and Internet-related services are unavailable, libraries are a dependable source of information. Books, magazines, and related materials are more concrete and aren’t subject to errors, viruses, and other unfortunate side effects that sometimes come with owning or using a computer.

  • Contrary to Internet cafes and WiFi hot spots, libraries are often predominantly quiet places to work and read. In today’s fast-paced, distracting world, a visit to the library can help people focus, relax, and pay better attention to reading and writing materials than if they were to do the same in a restaurant or bookstore.

  • Although the Internet is likely much more widely used than libraries in current times, libraries often offer library borrower’s cards for free, while it costs to maintain (or sometimes just use) an Internet connection. In addition, they encourage responsible borrowing practices and often contain good sources of scholarly, reputable information for research purposes. (The quantity of websites on a subject doesn’t always guarantee quality or accuracy.)

  • While libraries are generally consistent in offering newer books and materials, you can usually find many older books that offer a glimpse into the past and different perspectives and backgrounds than the newer authors of today. Older books highlight attitudes and opinions of individuals and groups that may have changed with the years, as well as different kinds of language devices and vocabulary that are also characteristic of certain time periods.
