FAQs About Cat Spaying

Cat Spaying Problems

While there are many benefits to spaying your beloved feline, there are also some things that you need to know about before you have the procedure done. The benefits still outweigh the risks as there will be no unwanted litter of kittens in your future; however, some things do bear mentioning.

Weight Gain

While it is true that your cat will be more likely to gain weight after being spayed, it is possible to stop it from happening. Just watch her calorie intake and she should have no problems with becoming obese.

No More Breeding

While most pet owners do not see this as a problem, you need to consider the idea before the operation. If your cat is a purebred that has supreme intelligence and an even temper, you may find you want to breed her to continue her bloodline.

Physical and Behavioral Problems

While many people prefer the playfulness of a kitten in their cat, many would prefer a more adult behavior. The problem with early spaying is that it can alter their physical maturity.

Surgery Risks

As with any type of surgery where you go under general anesthesia, there is the possibility of complications. It is rare but possible for a cat to fail to wake up or have problems when they do. The surgery is a risk for the feline in itself. Some of the possible risks are hemorrhages and as previously stated failure to wake up from the anesthesia. More serious but rare complications include need for further surgery and possible death.

A Warning for After the Surgery

There is the possibility of infection developing after the surgery. The symptoms would include pus, redness around the incision area and swelling. Fever may also be present when the incision is touched. If you notice any of these symptoms contact your vet for help.

The Cost

According to the age and condition of the cat spaying cost can range anywhere from $100 to $250. Although this may seem like a high price to pay, you have to judge it against the cost of feeding and raising a litter of unwanted kittens later on down the road.
