Causes of Eye Health Problems

If you have certain health conditions, you may experience problems with your eyes as well. Your doctor may order an eye exam to check if you have affected or damaged eye tissue. The examination can help your doctor prescribe the right treatment if damage has occurred.

Vision Problems

If you have trouble focusing on objects, seeing from a distance or locating things in the dark, you may have vision problems. Vision problems like presbyopia can change the way you see things. Losing the elasticity of your eye tissue and muscles can cause presbyopia. This and other vision conditions typically occur as you age. Your eyes may lose their ability to focus on objects from any distance. You may try very hard to see, which may trigger headaches and eyestrain.

Doctors can prescribe eyeglasses and contact lens to increase your vision. Surgeries like Lasik may help correct your vision by repairing the lens. There are options for correcting bad vision.

Diseases

Diseases such as diabetes can affect your eye health. This condition causes diabetic retinopathy. Retinopathy and other types of conditions damage the blood vessels leading to the retina. The retina reflects light and without the proper blood flow, its tissue can die. New blood vessels tend to develop over the eye tissue and block your eyesight. This may cause you to have impaired vision.

Another disease that can occur is cataract. Cataracts produce a cloudy appearance over each affected eye surface. The cornea becomes covered in a film that quickly spreads and prevents you from seeing. Cataract surgery can remove the film and restore your vision.
