Common Questions Aestheticians Ask Before Performing a Service

Dermatologists VS Aestheticians

Your skin is as important as your other organs, so caring for it is also important. Additionally, the condition of your skin plays a large role in how you feel about yourself. Both dermatologists and aestheticians can care for your skin, but the service each provides is undoubtedly different. Being aware of the differences can assist you when making the decision about who to see for your skin care and skin issues you may have.

Dermatologists

  • Dermatologists are medical specialists who treat skin complaints and diseases. The conditions a dermatologist often treats include acne, psoriasis, eczema and skin cancer. Additionally, they may perform a variety of skin-related surgeries.

  • Dermatologists have the medical knowledge and education to write prescriptions.

  • Dermatologist are trained to diagnose and treat skin ailments, anomalies and diseases; this includes skin cancer.

Aestheticians

The term comes from the word aesthetic, meaning pleasing in appearance.

  • Aestheticians are licensed cosmetologists who have been trained to apply cosmetic products and teach the latest techniques.

  • Aestheticians can recommend topical skincare products and makeup products.

  • Aestheticians attend a three to six month trade school, like a hairstylist, and therefore they are not medical practitioners, and may only recommend over-the-counter items.

  • Aestheticians can perform facials, body wraps, microdermabrasion, makeup application and aromatherapy

  • Aestheticians with a masters licensing can perform laser hair removal, certain types of chemical peels and laser skin resurfacing.

  • Another level of Aesthetician is the Medical Aesthetician. With advanced education, the practitioner is able to specialize in advanced cosmetic methods that help cover scars to help increase the client's level of personal comfort while dermatological surgery scars, such as occurs with cancer surgery, fade.
