How Does a Cardiologist Diagnose Heart Issues?
There are different types of heart tests given by doctors to diagnose heart issues. The type of heart test ordered by the doctor usually depends on the symptoms and medical history of the patient. A basic heart test can often lead to more invasive testing.
Electrocardiogram
An electrocardiogram, or EKG, is a test that is done in a doctor’s office and usually takes only a few minutes. The procedure is painless. EKGs can identify abnormal heart rhythm, a past or current heart attack and heart enlargement.
Cardiac Catheterization
Cardiac catheterization is used to determine if a person has blocked arteries. This procedure is usually done while the patient is under a sedative. A small tube is inserted through the artery in one of the extremities. Dye is injected into the tube and an X-ray is used to view the artery. The test can measure pressure within the heart and identify diseases of the heart valves.
Exercise Stress Test
An exercise stress test is usually performed by having the patient walk or run on a treadmill. The heart rate and rhythm is monitored with an EKG. Physicians will look for changes in the electrocardiogram waves during the exercise that could be a sign of blocked arteries.
Nuclear Stress Test
Nuclear stress tests are used to determine if a patient has coronary artery disease. Images of the heart are taken at rest and immediately following strenuous exercise. A gamma-ray camera provides images of the heart. Dye is usually injected intravenously in the person.
