How Does an Internet Speed Test Work?

Many Internet service providers make bold claims about the speed of their connections. As a customer, it may seem that you have no way of being sure if you are receiving the service you have been promised. However, Internet speed tests can help you ensure you are getting your money’s worth.

Mode of Internet Speed Tests

Internet speed tests are conducted directly through a website. Be cautious about sites that want you to download a program to your computer before conducting a speed test. Downloading software to your computer is not necessary and could really be a virus or Trojan horse. To find a website that will conduct a speed test for you, simply search through your favorite search engine. You will find several sites that will perform the test for free. These sites can provide the service for free because they are usually ad-supported.

Method of Internet Speed Tests

An Internet speed test is conducted much like a person would test the speed of a car. To find out the speed a car is traveling without using the speedometer, one would have to find out how long it took the car to travel from point “A” to point “B.” Internet speed tests use the same principle. A server will send packets of information directly to your computer and then request that the same information be sent back. This process usually is done several times in a matter of seconds. When it is completed, the website calculates the upload and download speeds and gives you the information.
