How to Change ISPs
Most people have by now become fully ingrained in the use of and, in some cases, dependence of computer and Internet technology in numerous aspects of their daily lives. Because of this, the choice of Internet service providers (ISP) can be a fairly important decision and, at times, it may become necessary to change ISPs to improve not just leisurely Internet browsing activities, but Internet-related business as well.
Items Needed:
- Telephone
- Old ISP configuration information: username, password, phone number
- New hardware (from ISP): modem, router, cables
Instructions:
- Research the various Internet companies who offer service in your area. Factors to consider and compare include price (including introductory rate vs. standard rate specials), service speed and available features. Choose the ISP that best fits your needs and budget.
- Call up a customer service representative from that ISP and ask to set up service.
- Uninstall any software given to you by your old ISP. This step may require manually reconfiguring your old Internet connection. To do this, go to your Control Panel and click where it says "Network and Internet Connections." Click "Set up or change your Internet connection," then click "Add" to add the connection. You will need your old configuration information to complete this process.
- Set up all necessary hardware for your new Internet service. This will likely include a modem and router, connected with Ethernet and, possibly, phone cables.
- Contact your new ISP's tech support line. It is available 24/7 and will be able to walk you through the activation and registration process of your new Internet service. As you are given all the various new configuration information, be sure to write it down and keep it stored. If you encounter any service issues in the future, it is very helpful to have this information handy.
- Install any new software for your new ISP if desired.
- Call your old ISP and cancel Internet service with it. Waiting to do this afterward will ensure that there is no break in your Internet availability. Cancelling your old service before the new one is set up may mean that you will be without Internet service for a few days.
