How To Extend a Pool Liner
More and more people are installing pools on their property for personal use when the weather gets hot. Some models use vinyl liners as an interior surface, to keep the water inside the pool. If you want to install a liner in your pool but the liner is too small, you might need to attach the liner to another piece of vinyl. This is easy if you have the right tools and the right technique.
The most economical type of pool you can install is one of several aboveground models available today. These models typically have vinyl liners. Some in-ground pools also have vinyl liners. If you are looking to use a piece of liner that is too small for your pool, you can add another piece of vinyl to make it usable.
Supplies needed:
- Vinyl pool liner
- Vinyl glue, designed for use in pools
- Glue application brush
- A 2x4
- A few cinderblocks
- Talk to a pool professional and make sure you have the correct dimensions for your pool liner. The best resource you can use is the retailer you purchased your liner from.
- Measure the pool liner you already have and determine how much additional liner you will need. Take at least 2 inches away from the measurement of your liner and add an additional 2 inches to the liner you need when making these calculations. This will account for the amount of liner needed at the seam.
- Find a large space free of dust to work. It is also helpful to make sure the space is wind-free so your glue will not get debris on it before being sealed.
- Place your replacements on the ground for a dry fitting. Take a moment to make sure you have enough liner to cover the surface of your pool before beginning the process, also the 2 inch overlap for the seam.
- Begin the process. Pull one seam apart and add glue to one piece of the liner two inches from the edge. If you have a small length, you can leave the glue exposed before joining the seams. If it is a long seam you, should fold the edge to keep debris out of the glue.
- Place the extension liner in place, so there is a total overlap of two inches and press hard.
- Rub the seams to remove any bubbles in the glue.
- Use a weight of some sort to make sure the seams adhere. A 2x4 with a few cinderblocks should work just fine for long seams.
- Allow approximately one hour for the seam to dry completely.
- Follow the same procedure with all seams. Install the liner following your pool manufacturer’s instructions and go swimming!
