How To Sand Auto Paint

The car should have a good sanding job done to it before the paint is applied. The paint will look and adhere much better. The sanding gets rid of low and high points on the car so the paint will look smooth and even. The task can be completed in a short amount of time only using a few simple tools. The sanding process can save you money when you do it yourself.


How to Sand Auto Paint


Materials Needed



  • Garden hose

  • Sanding block

  • 800 grit sandpaper

  • 1000 grit sandpaper

  • 1500 grit sandpaper

  • Clean rag

  • Silicone glaze

  • Rubbing compound


Rinse the entire car with water from a garden hose. This step will remove as much dirt as possible from the surface.


Fill a large bucket with warm water. The water will be used while sanding the car with a sanding block. Avoid applying too much pressure and do not sand on the contours of the car.


Put the 800 grit sandpaper on the sanding block. Wet the sandpaper with the water in the bucket. Sand the car.


Put 1000 grit sandpaper on the sanding block and wet it. Sand the entire surface of the car.


Put 1500 grit sandpaper on the sanding block and wet it with the water in the bucket. Sand the entire car.


Apply rubbing compound to the car using a clean cloth.


Take another clean cloth and apply a small amount of silicone glaze to it. Apply the glaze to the car using circular motions. Take another cloth and wipe over the glaze. Complete the entire car working on one section at a time.
