How to Access Your Foreign Bank Account

Accessing a foreign bank account is different from accessing one at your local bank. Because you cannot visit the foreign bank regularly, the account must be accessed online. Online banking is a convenient way to access your foreign bank account from the comfort of your home.

  • Contact the main office of your bank and ask to speak with a customer service representative. Explain that you have a foreign account and would like to know the best way to access it from your home. Many foreign banks offer online websites and online banking that allow you to deposit and withdraw funds electronically as well as check your account balance.

  • Register for online banking. You may be able to register over the phone using your bank account numbers and Social Security Number. Otherwise, the bank will send you the proper paperwork in the mail and you will be required to fill it out and send it back in. If you do not have a debit card, you will be offered one now. Once your paperwork has been processed by the bank, you will receive your debit card and can access your bank account online.

  • Log in to your foreign bank account using your account number or user name and password. Use the online services to set up direct deposit, send money to and from your regular bank account, or wire and transfer money from the foreign bank account to other savings or checking accounts. You can also check your balance and update your account information.
