How to Add Oil to a Murray Riding Mower
As you come to own different riding lawn mowers over the years, you will discover that adding oil to various brands of riding mowers is very similar. There are only a couple of common engines: Kohler and Briggs & Stratton. They do change a bit from year to year, but once you learn your way around one, you'll be quick to do the same with the next one.
Tool Needed:
- Small Funnel
- Locate the hood releases on the mower. When you are sitting on the mower, they are generally on the left and right bottom corners of the hood. They may be like clips or rubber straps or there is a single lever release at the top.
- Open the hood and allow it to rest all the way back.
- Look for the oil cap. It will probably say "Oil" on it.
- Clean away any debris that is around the cap. You do not want to introduce any dirt into the oil tank.
- Twist and pull the cap up and out. It may have a dipstick attached to show you the current oil level.
- Note how low the oil level is; clean off the dipstick with a clean rag or paper towel.
- Insert the funnel into the opening and begin adding oil. Add only a small amount at first until you get the feel for how much you really need to add to bring it to the "Full" line on the dipstick. Do not overfill it!
- Add just enough oil by continually checking the dipstick reading.
- Place the oil cap back on, and you are ready to get mowing.
