How to Adjust Desk Chairs
Most office workers spend the majority of their day in an office chair. A chair that is well built and fully adjustable is necessary to encourage proper posture and comfort. Taking the time to adjust your chair properly will ensure your office chair is a perfect match for you.
Height
Height adjustments allow the chair to be raised and lowered based on the height of the user and the height of the desk surface. Most standard office chairs have a seat height that is adjustable between 16 and 21 inches. Adjustable chairs have a pneumatic adjustment lever, usually located under the seat on the right side. Pulling the lever while seated lowers the seat, while pulling the lever with the chair empty raises the seat.
Tilt
Tilt adjustment adjusts the angle of the seat so that the user can lean on the backrest for support, while still leaving space between the backs of their knees and the edge of the seat. A single lever located under the seat allows for adjustment. It is usually located on the left side. Pulling it and leaning forward tilts the seat forward, and pulling it and leaning back tilts the seat back.
Backrest
There are two controls used to adjust the backrest. The first adjusts the depth of the seat. Standard chairs will adjust between 17 and 20 inches of seat depth. Adjust the chair to a depth where the back is on the backrest while the backs of your knees are 2 to 4 inches from the edge of the seat. Adjust by turning a knob on the back of the backrest and sliding the seat back to the desired depth. Tighten the knob back when finished. Some chairs also have a knob under the seat on the front that allows the backrest tension to adjust for more or less back support as needed.
Armrests
Remove armrests if needed to prevent interference with free movement. Adjust armrests by pressing buttons on the side of the armrest and raising or lowering the armrest. Adjust the armrest to create a 90-degree angle with your arms for most comfort.
