How to Back Into a Boat Slip
Backing into a boat slip with a boat is not as simple as parking a car. There are a lot of variables when it comes to backing a boat into a slip that the person in control of the boat must consider. Between water current and wind alone, backing into a boat slip is a learned skill.
Things to have on hand:
- Boat
- Boat slip
- Slowly steer the boat towards the sleep without making a wake.
- Steer the boat exactly in front of the slip.
- Leave several feet between the back of the boat and the slip.
- Place the boat in neutral, briefly.
- Throw the bumpers over the side of the boat, attached by a rope, to prevent any damage if the boat bumps into the dock or the pylons.
- Put the boat in reverse on the slowest speed. Do not rush the process; it will help to prevent any accidents.
- Moving in reverse, aim the front of the boat towards the left side of the pylon. This will help the boat to drift to the right while in reverse.
- Steer the boat’s wheel so that the boat will turn to the right.
- Place the boat in neutral again once it is within ten feet of the dock. If you have difficulty maneuvering the boat because of the wind and you are not sliding into the slip correctly, immediately put the boat in forward and straighten out, then try again.
- Turn the engine off once the boat is in the slip.
- Secure the boat properly by tying it up.
