How to Become a Music Producer
You can think of a music producer as the most important part of any song because they are the ones who can make it sound really good or make it sound bad. There are a lot of people who would love to be in this position but there are some things that you must know whenever you are ready to break into this industry.
- Get a job as an engineer or setting up microphones and drums. While this job won’t allow you to give a lot of input into the actual recording, it may lead to an internship with a great producer.
- Think about getting a music production degree. While it isn’t necessary, it does help teach you about different types of analog and digital technology. Of course, “street knowledge” is just as important. Regardless of which route you take, make sure to listen to the recordings of great music producers over and over again.
- If you have the money to do so, set up your own studio. This will allow you to start off by recording your friends’ bands and then work your way up from there. Consider charging a low fee to bring in some new bands. Make sure to record a wide number of genres in order to bring in more business. This will also help improve your resume and make you money.
- Once you have done some recordings, start networking. Create a CD of the different types of recordings you have done.
- Make yourself a website showcasing your talent and services. Spread the word via social networking sites, forums and blogs.
- Make sure to always have business cards with you wherever you go. This will allow you to network with musicians who may need your services in the future.
- Spend time networking with managers and publishers. You never know when one of them may hire you in the future.
- Make sure to check job banks on a regular basis for new gigs.
- Whenever there is an industry convention, you should be in attendance if at all possible. This is where the real information can be found.
